CHURCH OF CHRIST IN FRIENDSWOOD OVERVIEW |
The Church of Christ in Friendswood is a congregation of people from divergent backgrounds and needs who are drawn together by a common faith in Jesus Christ. As a congregation, we are growing to understand and accept the freedoms and demands of God's wondrous grace. We appreciate and learn from our traditions but strive, foremost, to follow the teachings of the scriptures and the leading of the Holy Spirit. We want the openness and freshness caused by daily growth and walking with Christ, even though at times we are fearful of leaving the comfort and security of human tradition and our finite immaturity. We, as Christian people, are uniquely gifted to accept, love and show people of all types the redeeming, lifting, forgiving Christ. We believe God offers an alternative to a stereotyped, useless religion that takes much and offers little. Through us, God means for those around us to have a stable, forgiven, spiritually-healthy life, because we have helped them see and know Jesus.
The City, the Area and the Church:
Friendswood is a bedroom community of 33,000+ people located on the southeast side of Houston. We are 15 miles south of the Houston Hobby Airport and just across the 1-45 Gulf Freeway from the Clear Lake area, which is the home of Johnson Space Center and NASA's Mission Control. The Gulf of Mexico port city of Galveston is just 30 miles south us. Houston is the home of one of the largest and finest medical centers in the world, the Texans (NFL), the Rockets (NBA), the Comets (WNBA), the Astros (MLB), and the Aeros (AHL). Houston also provides a wide variety of cultural opportunities and dining delights.
The Church of Christ in Friendswood is made up of approximately 140 family units and an average Sunday morning attendance of 278. There are 25 teens (7th - 12th grades) on the Youth roster. Presently, eight elders serve the church, and the staff consists of a preaching minister, an outreach & involvement minister, a youth minister (presently unfilled), an administrative assistant, a bookkeeper, and a building superintendent.
Some of the unique attributes of the Church of Christ in Friendswood include our long-term significant involvement with the ministers and churches of Friendswood in various Youth outreach efforts, the Community Prayer Breakfast, disaster relief efforts, and community worship times. We have maintained a positive reputation with the local schools, churches, and civic leaders for being a reliable resource and positive influence within the community.
Our church has enjoyed long-term relationships with local ministries such as child adoption and foster care services (Christian Child Help Foundation; Homes of St. Mark), Christian Counseling Center, Meals on Wheels, and the Impact Church of Christ inner-city ministry. We have maintained long-term commitments to foreign mission efforts in Africa (33 years) and Croatia (27 years). We have been blessed through the long and stable tenures of our ministry staff, and the staff enjoys a positive and beneficial relationship with our elders, who encourage our staff to grow and broaden their ministry perspective as God leads them.
The Church of Christ in Friendswood has been blessed with a new 21,000 square foot facility on 9.8 acres, built in 2002. This facility also provides a home for the Friendswood Christian School, which is a prominent ministry of this congregation. FCS utilizes our facilities five days each week in an outreach to 100+ students and their families.
Past ten years of Youth Ministry at Friendswood:
Two Youth Ministers have served our Teens since 1992. Ken Boggs served here from 1992 - 1995. Presently, Ken is a Marketing Rep. in Houston, and is serving in a part-time, interim Youth Minister role until the selection of the new Youth Minister is finalized. Toby Wilson served here from 1995 - 2002, and is now the preaching minister for a church in Arkansas.
A selection committee is now accepting applications according to these requirements.
